Rings & Things Winners

Lynne Ann Schwarzenberg swept the table at the Rings & Things contest with her polymer clay “Three Tiger Lilies” necklace winning first place in the polymer clay category as well as the $1000 grand prize. Congrats to Lynne Ann!

It was heartening to see so many good entrants in this year’s contest including (some, I see now, are from prior years…thanks Kim):

Ann Inman’s Cedric and Bubba, Lynne Ann Schwarzenberg’s Good Things Come In Threes, Eugena Topina’s Wild Fire, Deborah Anderson’s Reversible Tile Bracelet, Sandra Cowan and Lori Bouchard’s Roses of One Garden, Ginnie Parrish’s Happy New Year Vessel, Judy Dunn’s Fall Floral Splash, Cheryl Moore’s Nile River Goddess, Christina Cassidy’s Trot On (pictured here), Judy Dunn’s Underwater Starfish Box. Thanks to Tommie Howell for the link.

Friesen updates, moves forward

Christi Friesen is throwing everything but the kitchen sink into her new book, Polymer Clay and Mixed Media: Together At Last. The spikes on this dragon’s head are fork tines with the full forks running down the back. The book is due out at the end of the year.

Christi’s added a few new things from her books and classes to her website.

For her NYC book signing and workshops this weekend, Christi has invited students and fans to wear their Christi-inspired works (each receives a free raffle ticket for one of her works).

Early in her career, this often-imitated artist and teacher made a conscious decision to treat imitation as flattery and to avoid feeling threatened or to let territorial feelings get in the way of her creativity. “It’s art and it thrives on community,” she says. “I definitely get a kick out of having my work so well appreciated.”

McCaw launches new site

As promised, another new polymer clay site for you. Sandra McCaw launched this stunning showcase of her work last night. It’s refined and sophisticated with a dash of New England style.

“In working with polymer clay, I am able to create complex patterns where lines seem to lose their distinction and blend, and where colors bloom and merge,” she says.

Sandra’s complex and energetic work reflects her spirit well. We wish her much success as she takes off for her first wholesale show.

Take a look at last year’s post (and some archival photos) to see how far Sandra’s come!

Collins mixes discarded and original

Last week’s post about polymer clay artists at the ACRE show netted us a new name. Colorado’s Tish Collins stepped forward as she launches her new web site and makes her first venture into the wholesale world.

Her mosaic works are embellished with evocative objects and findings. Tish’s color palette samples are lovely to look at. She describes her work as combining the old and discarded with the bold and original.

Inabe’s floating translucents

Masako Inabe’s translucent goldfish truly floats on one of her polymer clay beads. And her butterfly flutters on another.

Donna Kato sent in these pictures taken at Carnival ‘07. “I think that goldfish bead is the most beautiful polymer bead I’ve ever seen. It’s so Japanese,” says Donna. (There are more pictures of it in Donna’s travel album.) Carnival ‘08 will take place this October-November.Dittmar white wall sculpture

Portland’s Meredith Dittmar has added Etsy to her list of venues and she’s posted pictures of new works in progress on her Flickr site. She’s scheduled a July show in New York and updated her site. There’s even a 2-minute animation. You’ll want to poke around.

More Acre works

Here’s Sandra McCaw’s piece from the ACRE show postcard. Judy Belcher’s new work for the show includes pieces that spin and turn (at right). Barb Fajardo says she’ll be there as a visiting artist.

Whining about photo size yesterday paid off with these photo contributions.

On Karen Park’s Art and Tea site look at the pictures from Laurie Mika’s workshop. They’ll put you in the mood to learn something new this spring.

Don’t you love the way Laurie has mounted her pieces on the wall? Karen’s pagoda mosaic reflects her tastes perfectly. Have a perfect weekend.

Acre Show Participants

Judy Dunn’s been preparing for the ACRE (American Craft Retailers Expo, the trade show for Wholesalecrafts.com) show in Las Vegas in April. Doesn’t her necklace go well with PCDaily’s site colors?

Thumbing through the list of ACRE artists, I came across a number of other polymer clay artists who will be in the show. Some of them like Tish Collins and Joyce Fritz (see the bug) have almost none of their work on the web.

Judy Belcher has a bit and you can also visit Gwen Pina’s site. Meisha Barbee, Lindly Haunani and Sandra McCaw will be sharing an NPCG-sponsored booth there as well.

It’s fun to browse through the ACRE site even though the pictures are frustratingly small. Let me know if you find any artists I missed.
