FOLLOW FRIDAY: The gathering

We’ve been flying under the radar for a year and now we’re ready to be seen. Fourteen polymer artists, 7 black and 7 white have been meeting every other week on Zoom since July 2020 when I interviewed Debbie Jackson. Are the conversations comfortable? No. Interesting? Yes. Tears? When we can’t hold back. Anger? Uh-huh. […] Read more

Little touches add up

These joined circles from Texas’ Myranda Escamilla (shapeandformstore) are trendy with some twists. The carving on the lighter circles reveals a flash of hot pink beneath. And the speckles in the clay add another element of interest. Add to that, the slight twist, like a flirty turn of the head, as the circles link. And […] Read more

RBG meets RGB

This picture was just what I needed. Polymer clay shows up on the US Supreme Court in the form of Kathleen Dustin and Ruth Bader Ginsberg at the Smithsonian Art2Wear show. Go see this tiny but monumental force (RBG) purchasing polymer art from an artistic force (RGB Dustin). Something in this world is headed in […] Read more

Scan the comments to see how many others with restless hands work in their cars on their laps or with the glove box as a work […] Read more

Heirloom polymer

New Hampshire’s Kathleen Dustin reinterprets her grandchildren’s artwork as polymer brooches in her newest series. The artwork combines the kids’ loose and colorful style with Grandma’s distinctive wirework and polymer skills. See the rest of her series on Instagram. What could you turn into a polymer heirloom in your family?

Spring at the Smithsonian

Ogle Kathleen Dustin’s latest line of handbags at the Smithsonian Craft Show this weekend (or just study them on Instagram). She’s been refining the closures and getting fancy with the carrying strap. Kathleen even has one she agrees is “cute.” I’m winging my way west for a few days of sun and grandsons.

Bio Bopping polymer

The Bonnie Bishoff Bio Bop brooch is quite a mouthful for mid-week. This polymer, copper, paint and steel wire mixed media pin is on its way to CraftBoston for one last holiday hurrah. While they look light and airy, Bonnie’s pieces are built on metal which makes them incredibly solid. Betsey Baker and Kathleen Dustin will also have […] Read more

Spring finery in polymer

New polymer purses for spring from Kathleen Dustin appeared just in time for the Smithsonian Craft Show April 26-30. See the other new additions on her Instagram and Facebook. (David Forlano and Steven Ford will also be at the Smithsonian show.) These designs continue a couple of Kathleen’s series. At the left is her Tribal Circus Purse […] Read more

Frozen polymer moments

Guess what medium was used in the piece that won the top award at the Schmuck (German for jewelry) exhibit during the world’s top international contemporary jewelry event. You are looking at Jelizaveta (Liza) Suska’s Frozen Moment brooch made of polymer and crushed marble powder. It’s the winner of the top prize at the Munich exhibit and was […] Read more
