Sending happy out

Pamela Carman sends happy out for your Monday on PolymerClayDaily.com

“It’s the joy of riotous color and pattern that drives me to create my work. It is my way of sending happy out into the world,” says Florida’s Pamela Carmen.

Nothing better than a bird of happiness to fly into your Monday. Can you picture the supply of canes Pamela must have on hand to feather her large menagerie? See her creations on Flickr.

Her entry in a recent show called Woof, Meow, Chirp, and Slither: Artists interpret the world of pets earned a top award from Florida CraftArt. When you send happy out, some of it returns to you.

New ways with liquid polymer

Lynn Yuhr expands the uses of colored liquid polymer on raw clay on PolymerClayDaily

This pile of brooches from Florida’s Lynn Yuhr (theflyingsquirrelstudio) exudes a mid-century sensibility. They look like tv sets from the 50s.

Lynn has been exploring and pushing the boundaries of using colored liquid clays on polymer.

I watched Lynn in action and persuaded her to share a few of her discoveries on this week’s StudioMojo. You’ll be surprised at how she uses the liquids and what she’s found about how they behave on raw clay.

See why she keeps a “puddle” on her worksurface and how she dips into that puddle for surprising effects.

Updated Zen

Michelle Sansonetti calms our jangled nerves with some Zen polymer today on PolymerClayDaily

The smooth rounded rock shapes on this necklace from Australia’s Michelle Sansonetti (Zedemee) have a Zen-like quality that appeals. Her swirls seem to calm in contrast with the weather maps that threaten.

Michelle credits Spain’s Fabi Ajates for inspiring her in a 2019 class. Isn’t it marvelous how polymer ideas bounce around the world? No boundaries, no weather disturbances, no politics. Hang on to that thought today.

Preparing for Fall

Donna Greenberg prepares for Fall in polymer on PolymerClayDaily.com

New Jersey’s Donna Greenberg prepares us for fall with her 18″ Carnival, an explosion of colors and shapes.

“After months of working in controlled somber tones, it’s just what the doctor ordered to lift my spirits going into Fall,” Donna says.

Polymer, paper, pencil, and paints.

Zoom in to experience the lush layers. What does Fall look like in your work?

From mountains to market

Joan Tayler's horse whistles make manly pendants on PolymerClayDaily

Finding a memento for my husband when I travel is sometimes difficult. Joan Tayler’s horse whistles make the perfect addition to Blair’s collection of polymer jewelry.

Joan sells thousands of polymer whistles in her Granville Island Public market booth each year. They’re online here and on Etsy.

We could tell when Joan was producing whistles at our mountain retreat from the test tweets that signal that a whistle is done. If you’ve always wanted to decorate your own polymer whistle, download her tutorial.

Mountain landscape

Unless I can find a way to outfox the limited wifi at our mountain campus in Colorado, PCD will be on hiatus this week. Creative juices are flowing but we’re pretty much unplugged digitally. I’ll stop banging my head against the recalcitrant router.

In the meanwhile, enjoy this swap item made by Ginger Davis Allman (BlueBottleTree). It’s a great representation of the vistas we’re enjoying.

Ginger started with a slice of a white-to-blue blended cane. Then she stacked six wavy layers of various colors of polymer to create a beautiful mountain landscape. As an added surprise, she mixed glow-in-the-dark powders into the base layer cane so that the night sky lights up in the dark.

We’ll soak up nature and be back to our regular schedule next week.

Let go and see what happens

Libby Mills lets nature inspire her world of geometry on PolymerClayDaily

Swap anxiety hits everyone! Connecticut’s Libby Mills felt threatened by the requirement that swap items must be “nature-inspired.”

Look at how she invites nature into her geometrically-inspired comfort zone! She stacks irregularly shaped layers into lovely natural forms.

As we pack our supplies for a week of claying, we laugh at ourselves for worrying. Sometimes you just need to breathe, trust, let go, and see what happens.

In my rush to get everything done before I leave, I popped a fresh video into this week’s StudioMojo which is all set for Saturday delivery. I’ll be traveling so next week’s PCD posts may be sporadic. And StudioMojo will be full of mountain air polymer (whatever that means). Come find out!

Whipped into shape

Nancy Nearing brings veneers to life with dimension on PolymerClayDaily.com

What a difference dimension makes! Ohio’s Nancy Nearing has been on a roll since taking Lindly Haunani’s class.

The flat veneers below are very much Lindly-inspired but they are infused with Nancy’s aesthetic.

When Nancy ruffles and bends

and sculpts the flat collages, she takes them to a whole different place.

Nancy’s a neighbor so I caught this project mid-process. They’re not even on her Instagram yet! We will revisit them when she adds more flowery details and mounts them in shadow boxes.

Spring blossoms down under

Fee (PickledGingerJewellery) gets ready for AU spring with these blooms on PolymerClayDaily.com

Australia’s Fee (PickeledGingerJewellery) is getting ready for spring with these mixed media hollow polymer flowers. The petals on these 3″ long blooms are made from leather.

Fee perfected the hollow bulb for her jellyfish earrings and the same shape comes in handy here.

They look like small pretty explosions. And they’re sold out already.
