This polymer potato chip ring from Ponsawan Silas popped up as I was researching Pardo clay use. Very convincing, eh?

Funny how food references look so enticing when you decide to cut back on snacks. Where are those faux broccoli examples?

I’ll be back in the swing tomorrow.

Not only is she a lovely person, her work is so consistently fresh and humorous–love Ponsawan’s stuff. I can only imagine what a joy her classes are to attend–too bad I’ll have to miss the one in Chicago.

    • reply Ponsawan ,

Thanks Cyntia. I am trying to cut back on the snack too and I gave up meat 3 months ago, so Broccoli might be coming up soon. This ring and a few others will be part of The Ring a Day Exhibition, which will run from May5th to May 29th at PUNCH Gallery in Seattle, Washington for SNAG Conference. I will not have a chance to see it, but if you live in the area, please stop by to see the “Real” faux potato chip ring.

      • reply Anita Brandon ,

The potato chips are unreally “REAL”. Ponsawan’s work is consistently awesome and she’s a lovely and generous person as well.

Don’t forget that Ponsawan is teaching a Bevy of Rings class before the IPCA Retreat in July. I can’t wait to see her students’ creations!

YUMMM – DO THEY COME IN BBQ !!

              pRINGles! love them!!!

              • reply Adrienne ,

Don’t mean to be a bummer, but, yes they are very convincing, looking like a chip. But, maybe it’s because I’m not that good with polymer clay, I see so much stuff made that is rings, jewelry etc., that I can’t imagine anyone would wear. Same thing with jewelry made lately all out of junk from a metal recycler. I don’t get it.
She is very talented, I’m not knocking her work. I’m just wondering if people actually would wear this stuff.

another yummmm….a little bit ‘o salivation going on here…
so real and tasty looking. How about jalepeno recipe?

I would wear these!! They make me happy to look at them….

                    • reply Ponsawan ,

Good point Adrienne, but Artist makes things to flex their creativity and imagination. Not all jewelry need to be wearable. Just because you call it a ring, or it looks like a ring, doesn’t mean it has to be worn, as a ring.
The inspiration came when my husband bought me the Lay’s Potato chip instead of Ruffle’s Potato chip and I was not very happy. I could have yell at him but I choose the lighter side of the situation and made this ring.
This ring has brought a million smiles and joyful laughers. I am a messanger and I had delivered. Now it’s up to you to like it or not. 🙂

Good question, Adrienne, and terrific answer, Ponsawan. And yes, I can see Wendy wearing it with class and humor, inciting “I want one of those!” responses.

There are so many artists working just for fun and by intuition, there are many others working to earn money, giving to the customers just what they require. I bet Ponsawan is happy with her work and, Adrienne, I would wear this potato chip and I know a lot of common people like me that would too!!!

The best chips EVER! No calories or fat. I don’t eat chips, but I would wear this. The best thing is Powsawan’s motivation for making them. She took what could of been a bad situation and made it positive by turning it into art.

I did a double-take when I saw Ponsawan’s chips. What fun! Sort of reminds me of the plastic fruit we grew up with on the dining room table, only these would end up in a bowl in the TV room. …just wondering, where’s the dip?

now, i don’t eat chips very often, but it looks so real, i think i’d start to nibble at the ring….keeps away the calories and i suppose it would hurt the teeth a bit! i love the real pringle look! well done!!!

Ponsawan, what an amazing job. I am so disappointed that I won’t be at the workshop tomorrow. Your work never fails to amaze me. See you at the IBS meeting next week.

I would TOTALLY wear this! A ring, a necklace – earrings – a potato crisp SET even! They are soooo real! Even more than those spooky ‘reborn’ dolls – lol.

Thank you everyone for explaining the artistic inspiration and the reasoning behind making these chips. I have a renewed attitude toward artistic talent and have been inspired by your answers to my questions. I have seen much of Ponsawan’s designs. She is amazing!
