Olympic fervor has thrown us into an oddly patriotic mood. Who better to show team spirit than Chicago’s Dan Crowley? His ladies, loosely based on his aunts, are his favorite characters. This one is called America the Beautiful!
Dan is a sculptor and puppeteer and you can watch him build a finger puppet while he talks about his career in this short video interview. He sells online through Etsy and Art Of Toys and shares new works and tidbits on Facebook.
Five winners
Five lucky PCD readers will be picked to win a copy of the Fire issue of From Polymer To Art magazine published by Saskia and Marjon in the Netherlands.
Scroll down and submit a comment to this post and you’re automatically entered in the giveaway drawing. Instead of competing for Olympic gold or silver, you’ll be in the running for Fire if you make a comment by Sunday midnight. Look at the goodies in this issue and have a winning weekend.
Jenny Marsden ,
I just had a sneak peek at the “Fire” issue of Polymer to Art. Saskia and Marjon have delivered another inspiring magazine. I would love a copy of it.
Dan Crowley’s work is amazing, a bit scary but amazing.
Margaret Heizenrader ,
The ugly side of America.
Margaret Heizenrader ,
I dislike this piece less now that I have watched Mr. Crowley’s video. It’s more the expression on the the character’s face that gives me the creeps then Mr. Crowley’s talent. And he has talent! And is brave enough to use it!
Oh, this lady looks like someone to reckon with! The new issue of From Polymer to Art looks hot….
Fire looks like an amazing publication! Plus, Dan’s aunts must be really something!
Wendy Moore ,
As one who has attempted the occasional bodacious babe, I am in awe of Dan. A very suitable picture for a magazine on FIRE!
Love it!!! Very talented
Crystal carpenter ,
Wonderful!!
she looks like a real competitor!
Karen ,

what and inspiration…
“sculpting in color”
“something I am drawn to is artist who are unique”
“trust the overall process”
“the image or the thing is already complete and it is just up to my hands to brush the sand away.”
“the need to create”
would love to sit down and have coffee with this amazing artist

I JUST saw the weekly MOJO and I have seen that BOX TROLLS teaser while watching cable on demand shows and EVERY time it comes on I’m paralyzed with wonder!!
I was somewhat deflated when it shows the september open date…..
Now there is a dream clayers job!!!
As per the Fire issue … what’s NOT to love about that! I have only gotten them in electronic format. Can you tell me if anyone distributes them in the US?
Marjon ,

love the personality he puts into the characters, kinda’ like Dinko but just a bit tighter in technique but what you fall in love with is the personality of the piece.

Dan’s characters are very expressive, and she’s a blonde bombshell. Have you seen his finger puppets?
Nancy Ulrich ,

Thanks for offering us this opportunity Cynthia.

I would love to have a copy of the Fire issue of From Polymer to Art. Please enter my name in the drawing. As to the lady in the sculpture above – she does look like a competitor, and I wouldn’t want to be on the other side of anything she was contesting!
Andrea Victoria Paradiso ,
Well, Dan…just watched your video. Thank you for writing my “Why I Would Rather Be An Artist than Anything Else In The Whole Wide World” essay for me…lol! After many years, I have finally taken the plunge. I may be sinking…but I have taken the plunge. The water is cold, fresh and clear and I am replenished! Your work is beautiful and funny and endearing. I remember it as one of the first extremely unique works in polymer that I saw in Donna Kato’s book. So I recognized your “America The Beautiful” right away…and The Lady certainly is. Congratulations for being featured and kudos for taking the life-long challenge, no-holds barred!
Love America. Would love a copy of the magazine, too. Good polymer clay day today – finished 2 projects!
Love her, too.
She certainly is sassy! Love the outfit!
Love Dan’s work and love the magazine. Would love to win a copy. And thanks for the video link to learn more about Dan and his work. Just wish I could be that creative.
I could use come Fire in my claystash..;)

Happy to see the Olympics come and go. Mostly I get tired of the theme song.

Wow! I never thought of making finger puppets! These are such cartoons!
Instead of Uncle Sam — She is Auntie Sammie! Made in America for sure. Keep up the great work, Dan. The Fire Issue sounds fabulous too. Hope I win a copy. Thanks Cynthia for the work you do with PCD…it is my home page…Love it.
